John Oliver To Face Defamation Charges After Being Sued By Robert E. Murray

“Last Week Tonight” host John Oliver is in trouble after using his show to lambaste one of the country’s enormous coal mining providers. He even moved forward mock its chief executive. Oliver did not seem worried by his comments and he further asserted that it was indeed something that needed to be done.

In a 24-minute segment on the downfall of the coal industry and the eventual intervention of Donald Trump to bring it back, Oliver was seen to rail against the mining giant Murray Energy Corporation as well its chief executive Robert E. Murray. According to cleveland.com, the company’s chief executive has been caught in numerous instances trying to lay blame of the former president Barrack Obama’s administration.

In fact, he was quite vocal affirming that it was a making of the “evil agenda” by President Barrack Obama. It is a statement that has been met with mixed reactions among most of the people living in the United States of America, with many terming the official as someone who is just giving excuse to cover up for own his failure.

While proceeding with his popular show, Oliver said, “I’m going to need to be careful here because when we contacted Murray Energy for this piece, they sent us a letter instructing us to ‘cease and desist from any effort to defame, harass, or otherwise injure Mr. Murray or Murray Energy. They added that failure to comply would result in immediate litigation.”

The renowned host went ahead to tore at the 77-year-old coal magnate. He termed him a “geriatric Dr. Evil,” who was not performing his duties appropriately. He used to mistreat his employees. Asides from that, he did much to weaken the coal safety regulations through litigation which is not something a good leader should have done. According to him, Murray was “on the same side as black lung.”

On Wednesday, Murray decided to sue Oliver on defamation claims. The lawsuit was filed in West Virginia circuit court. The top official says the show host had indicated clear intentions to assassinate his character and reputation.
